NGK SPARK PLUGS AND LAMBDA SENSORS SELECTED FOR FIAT'S NEW MULTIAIR ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM
NGK Spark Plugs has announced that its spark plugs and oxygen sensors have been selected for Fiat Group Automobiles (FGA) new engine control system, MULTIAIR, launched at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show on the new Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4L.
MULTIAIR technology manages the inlet and exhaust valves electro-hydraulically, in effect providing extremely variable camshaft profiles which, when allied to a throttleless intake air control, vastly reduce pumping losses, improve fuel consumption and engine performance.
NGK Spark Plugs provides both the high performance spark plugs and oxygen sensors - under the NTK brand name - for this cutting edge car. Turbo charged versions will use NGKs IKR9F8 fine wire iridium plugs whilst the naturally aspirated versions will be fitted with NGKs DCPR7E-N-10 nickel alloy plugs. Both these plugs are currently used in other Alfa/Fiat models.
NGK/NTKs wide range oxygen sensor - ZFAS-U2 - will be used to provide the high accuracy A/F control necessary when controlling not only the quantity of fuel injected but also the air flow rate, ensuring optimised A/F ratio. This was selected because of its very fast light-off time, quick signal response and high degree of accuracy, together with its resilience against water splash. NTKs OZAS-S2 binary Lambda sensor has been selected for the downstream catalyst monitoring function.
